Old Oak & Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC) needed to build a clearer understanding of which sectors have the best prospects for driving forward local growth. The area is identified as an Opportunity Area in the London Plan with potential to accommodate an additional 65,000 jobs, making it the UK’s largest regeneration project. We were asked to help partners identify what they could do to realise growth of this magnitude.
We prepared a detailed socio-economic profile of the OPDC economy to understand recent economic performance and important sector strengths. We undertook a policy review and wide ranging consultations with stakeholders and sector experts. Nine sectors were reviewed in detail to understand which would offer the greatest potential to create jobs and economic value. We then identified the most attractive locations for development and advised on how to harness their growth. Our recommendations were informed by a series of case studies on successful regeneration projects and international cluster development initiatives.
Our work supports the Old Oak and Park Royal Local Plan and will guide future economic development initiatives in the area including business support, marketing and promotion, supply chain development, infrastructure and workspace. We presented plans to support growth in the business and professional services, ICT, media & creative services, life sciences, advanced manufacturing, clean-tech and logistics sectors. Our insights are informing master-planning work for key strategic sites, and helping developers to secure planning permission and unlock new investment.
