Centre for Cancer Drug Discovery Economic Impacts

Question: What is the potential economic impact of the Centre for Cancer Drug Discovery?

The Institute of Cancer Research has ambitious plans for a new drug discovery centre which forms part of a 25-year regeneration project to develop a life sciences hub in Sutton, which integrates with the London Cancer Hub. The proposed £75 million state-of-the-art research facility would enable the Cancer Therapeutics Unit to scale up significantly and co-locate different disciplines in one location. To secure the investment ICU needed a robust evidence base on potential economic impacts.

Solution: comprehensive assessment of economic and research benefits

Our work covered standard economic benefits resulting in direct, indirect and induced gross value added and jobs, as well as a range of wider impacts on health outcomes, drug pipeline development and collaboration activity. Our team also produced case studies to draw out the economic benefits of specific drug development projects and key successes of the CTU.

Impact: evidence helping secure progress

Our work was used to by the Institute of Cancer Research to bid for capital funding and has helped secure planning permission for the scheme.
