It might be a strange thing coming from a ten-year-old, but I always had a very clear idea of wanting to become an economist some day, although perhaps with little idea about what that actually involved.
I suspect that much of the influence came from growing up in post-soviet Ukraine. The political and economic issues taking place at the time were very much linked to the country’s energy dependence on its neighbour.
This early experience is one of the reasons why I find new energy technologies and renewables fascinating. These energy solutions could level the playing field between countries with, and those without, natural resources.
The opportunity to put economics into practice is what first attracted me to Regeneris. The energy dimension was a welcome bonus. The first project I worked on focused on unconventional gas. From day one I found myself immersed in a project and was amazed at how much knowledge I quickly developed. My job is to provide an independent and informed view on topics that will help shape and inform important decisions that have the potential to change lives, places and economies. This adds up to a lot of responsibility. Applying the principles I learnt at university to solve real world problems is very fulfilling and has just confirmed to me that I made the right choice.
Since then, my portfolio of energy related work has grown and now includes deep geothermal wells, nuclear, onshore and offshore wind farms, plus a smart energy demonstrator. I get a sneak-peak into the latest industry issues and innovation projects that that are emerging. Doing market assessments for cutting edge demonstrator facilities, I get to consult with innovators and businesses at the forefront of technology. My work helps to shape the way in which industries are changing. I get to develop business cases and do feasibility studies for projects that will enable next generation technologies to shape our future and make energy security a reality for more people.
