Regeneris Consulting has been appointed by the London Development Agency (LDA) to lead a spatial and economic analysis of retail street markets in London. Regeneris Consulting will draw directly on the advice of a number of industry experts during the project, including independent consultants Alan Elder, Krys Zasada and Professor Sophie Watson and retail planning experts Strategic Perspectives.
There nearly two hundred street markets in London, and, although many individual markets are thriving, there are some indications of overall decline across London. This is a concern given the potential benefits street markets can provide, including cheap food, local employment and business formation opportunities, as well as the attraction of visitors.

The LDA has commissioned a team led by Regeneris Consulting to provide a spatial and economic analysis of retail street markets in London and to identify how they can be supported. The retail market landscape is complex, with each individual market typically differing according to retail models, management systems, product ranges and target markets and local socio-economic characteristics. Markets also vary significantly according to their stage in the market lifecycle and are subject to a huge number of external influences and variables, from localised issues such as changes to trading environments to global issues such as the current economic recession. There is therefore no single solution that can be applied to all markets.
The study will review all types of retail street markets, and will include extensive consultation with pan-London stakeholders. The overall objective is to advise the LDA on how best to intervene in order to maximize the potential economic benefits of street markets. It is anticipated that final reporting will take place in Spring 2010.
